Father Patrick O'Brien, after being invested as the 2009 Grand Marshal.
After a top-secret-closed door voting session at Benedictine Military School, Father Patrick O’ Brien was unanimously selected as the Grand Marshal for the 2009 Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations.
O’ Brien says he was humbled and honored by the group’s selection and can’t help but give thanks to his heritage.
“Many of my Irish ancestors, especially the person who encouraged me to come to the states when I was young, my grandmother, Ms. Anna McCarthy, and of course my mother who was here and my father, who never made a trip, over but always encouraged me to come to the states,” O’Brien said.
Last year marked his 40th year in Savannah, after coming from Ireland. O’Brien is a native of Ireland and has served as parish priest at several area churches over the years, most recently at St. Peter the Apostle on Wilmington Island. He has also served as the parade committee’s chaplain for many years.
The 2010 Grand Marshal will be selected on Sunday, February 28.
